Delta - Final Handin

I've been trying to upload the txt files and the .pic files but it's seems to take forever so I had to upload a zip file containg the txt files to my website. They can be found here. Below is a slideshow of my final renders. There are more than 15 because I just couldn't help myself throwing away all that work I have done to produce final renders. I guess it's all part of the documentation process. My website is also completed where the images can be seen.

Delta - Lightstudio Issues

Seems like everyone's having problems with lighstudio however, I have managed to get renders out of it but no where near as good as the mental ray ones.

Some of the issues we had when importing the model to VIZ were that a few of the elements were missing and not in the right position such as floor slabs, walls and railings. Other issue we had was that; when you select a wall, it selects a whole bunch of elements and as a result, the materials get applied to a whole bunch of elements rather than the element you want to assign. However, this issue was solved by detaching the elements using the editable mesh tool. The model was incredibly diffucult to edit, rotate and pan.

Rendering issues were also found. Whenever a render was done with the same view and the same materials, everytime the render would look different for some reason. A few test renders were carried out in order to get the light and the shadows looking right. These test renders were produced at a lower size (320x240). When the light and shadows were sorted by checking the test renders, larger final renders were then carried out which showed a different result, mostly a poor result compared to the smaller test render. Each render took between 10-30 mins including the awful looking ones.

The unchecking of geometry, octree and other features did not work. An error always showed up when unchecking the respective boxes.

Delta- Rendering Problems

I have done a few final renders but the floor material does not seem to be calculated properly or some other problems have started to occur. I have placed the respective material on the floor and UVW mapped it but when rendering it in mental ray with FG and GI on, the floor seems to only have the material uvw mapped in some areas and the rest is just not visible. I dont know what the problem is. It seems to work aright when i do a test render with scanline renderer but when i render it with mental ray for my final one which takes like 2-3 hours, in the end the floor material does not come out aright. The image below shows the problem which has occured in a few of my renders now!!

render1

The solution to this problem I found was to make a plane in VIZ as the floor and then place the floor material on it. This has worked however; it is time consumig to get the plane in the right position because most of the floors are curved and sometimes gaps are visible as well. It is also, difficult to see the material when uvw mapping therefore, it is all guess work at this stage and hopefully getting it right in the final renders. That hasn't really payed off in the render I did last night as some of the patches are visible and the uvw mapping hasn't shown up very well.

Delta - update on roof mullion structure

Sam,

I have deleted all the exploded roof mullion structure in revit which was arrayed and made instances in VIZ. It's working much better than the array tool which we used in revit. However, it is time consuming so I am only doing the bits which will affect my rendering views. Also, when copying the mullion structure in VIZ, it does not select the whole structure as a component or a group. You will have to select each element of the component and than make instances. This can be done by selecting all the elements of the roof mullion structure and then just move the component by pressing shift at the same time. By pressing shift and moving the component at the same time, a copy of the component will be created and then you will just have to rotate it in position. The images below show the roof muion structure using instances:

Delta - Modeling Progress

Just completed some of the minor stuff before exporting the modeltoVIZ for final renders. I have been working on the atrium bit which is now completed with the bridges, ramps and the handrails. Floors have been completed and edited. Also, the roof has been added on my side of the model so it looks fully completed.

Now Sam just has to copy and paste the light wells and put some glazing which leads to the outdoor area which I have completed. The images below show the progress:

We have tested the model in Lightstudio and is running smoothly so far..

Delta - Lightstudio Problem

I just had a go at trying to get lightstudio working for our revit model but was not succesful in my attempt. I tried a few things out but when our model is exported as a .3DS file from VIZ it just explodes. The topography and a few walls are on one side and the rest of the model is on the other side. When exporting the model as a .3DS from deep exploration it still does the same thing when you import it backto VIZ. However, it remains fine when viewing it in deep exploraton. The image below shows what happens when exported in Viz and when exported using deep exploration and importing it back to VIZ.

Delta - progress of the atrium and level3 exhibition space

Today I worked on the atrium space and the level 3 exhibition space. the atrium bit is almost finished with the ramp and the bridges. Just need to add the handrails and edit the floor of levels 3 and 4. The level 3 exhibition space consists of a balcony or a mezannine which looks down to the atrium. This has been completed. I have re edited the topography and smoothed it out a bit more. I have flattened out the grass roof above the light wells and brought this height down because it was too high before in comparison to the building.

Delta - progress of the weekend and theme idea

I have pretty much finished modelling my side of the model. Now I just need to choose the viws which I want to render and detail those bits. I have come up with a theme which I would like to explore. This theme includes exploring the materiality of the building and how lighting enhances those materials to provide essential illumination in various spaces. This includes exploring the reflectancy of the materials and how they contribute to the overall lighting of the space. A lot of different types of materials are used in this building and some of these include: concrete panels, brick, patinated copper (an interesting material to explore), limestone and glass. I still have to develop my theme but this will be done as I start to choose the views I want to render. The building also includes heavy materials and light materials which I would like to explore through renders showing the contrast between them and how they enhance the space architecturally.

As far as the progress of the model goes, the lighting fixtures in the foyer space has been added. The ramps with concrete walls which acts as hand rails have been added and windows have been added on the exterior surface of the semi-circle wall. The images below show the progress:

Thought it about time I put a roof on. I noticed the end pointy parts of the semi circle have a higher roof than the rest of the building. These bits and an anchour for the rest of the building which appears to be visually lighter. Its starting to look quite good

How To Create 3D Anaglyphs/3d pictures in Photoshop

I found this cool Photoshop technique on the web creating Anaglyph's or 3d pictures. These are the sort of pictures that you wear those red and blue 3d glasses for (I don't have any at the moment might steal some for work, we have them for those 3d dvd movies).

I haven't tried it out yet but perhaps will at some stage

I wonder if it would be acceptable in this course in we did one with our renders.

You can also download software to do it for you but they seem to want to charge for it. (rapid share does come in handy sometimes.

How To Create 3D Anaglyphs in Photoshop

From Dan Payne, with improvements by Angel Guzman

A 3D anaglyph image will appear three-dimensional when viewed through red/blue lenses. Here is a reader-submitted technique for creating 3D anaglyphs in Photoshop 5.5. The tutorial should be compatible with later versions of Photoshop as well.

Delta - Kumu Art museum update completed glass facade

This glass facade is pretty much complete, I just need to change that wall behind to a curtain wall I will have to make some changes when I get back to the central file don't want to fiddle and screw everything up again work set wise.

When I get back to the central file some of the geomentry needs to be joined as well.

The building has this double facade thing going on with the front facade frosted glass and the behind curtain wall completely transparent. This has the ability to create interesting light patterns hen there is a gap in the frosted glass where the light can get through.

Between those walls there is a gap with transparent glass at the end allowing more light to travel through.

Delta - Outdoor Area and Ramps Update

The ramps and the outdoor area is almost completed. Just need to tidy up a few things such as hand rails. A few adjustments need to be done such as the topography in order to create the walkway tunnel. An issue I have found to be solved is the artificial garden areas which are also sloped. I have beed trying to model this but the angles of the slopes have been quite difficult to determine. This has to be sorted out when the team meets together on Tuesday. new_centrl_file1805owner - 3D View - 3D View 4

the roof structure is pretty much completed just need to array it around the circle, but cannot at the moment with out checking out work sets and I don't really feel like mucking this up at the moment so I'll just do it we I get back to school.

I have uses reference planes to define a center point of the semi circular building, I can now array by selecting array defining rotationally then dragging the blue rotate icon to the center point and then just rotate the objects.

I have been trying to get my deep exploration model wroking and not exploding. I even had some advice from team alpha to select all in viz and export selected as a 3ds file.
This didn't work.

I have also been trying to open a max file in deep exploration 5 and saving back to a 3ds file. This seemed to work but when I open the 3ds file the cameras are all disorientated and facing the ground. I tried to make new cameras in viz, when I export it with 1 new camera it worked ok, but when I added 3 new cameras the export would just explode the model again.

I may wait until deep exploration 5 is installed on the school computers

Delta - Kumu Art Museum what the?

Ankit man what the +=*- is going on?
By moving the curved wall you have stuffed up the alignment of everything. Take for instance the refference line below I had drawn them so they were ialligned with the mullions now there not. This means our roof plains are all out of line and the extruded roof mullions that I created.

Not to mention the curtain wall is now floating and not joined to my solid wall anymore.

This really pisses me off, as I spent ages trying to get everything lined up, and to fix it will take ages. Please just work no your stuff and I'll work on mine.

Delta - Update on Roof Structure

The glazed roof in the circulation and foyer space is almost completed. The glass panels have been placed all around the area with proper lengths. At first, the panels were placed at a different length which made the panels go straight through the interior walls of Level 5 exhibition space and therefore this had to be adjusted. What needs to be done is just the mullions on the roof and the truss system. Below are images of the progress:

I have been working at school on my local file and I was saving to the central file about every 15 minutes. All was going fine until I tried to save to the central file again and this nasty message poped up.

"Data in file deltanewssharedfile07-05.rvt needs to be manually upgraded.
Please contact your autodesk Revit service provider."

and then also another one "Software error"

Have no idea what this means so I am going to email the guys at the student autodesk website for some help.

My local file has all of the changes that have been made, so an easy fix at the moment would be to make my local file into a new central file

Delta Kumu update.

Today I was working on the glass roof on the museum. I tried just a normal roof but couldn't get the slop on it correctly. I was having dificulty creating a roof curved in plan and with a 10.3 degree slope.Tried creating a sweep, but that was screwing me around as well.
when it try defining the slope and finnish the roof an error message says "can't create roof footprint"

Slope of the glass roof taken of the scale cross sections - tan(angle x) = (opposite)/(adjanct) tan(angle x) = (1200)/(6552.2) (angle x) = 10.3 degrees slope

Now I think i've sorted it the curtain wall below is not perfictly curved, it is made up of straight segments 3400mm.So to set the footprint of the roof the boundry of the roof has to meet each of these segements presicly, it wont work with just a curved line which it had before.

Errors occur when I try to create a roff with more than a few segments, so I have had to create all seperate roof segments with the same spacing as the mullions as the curtain wall.

Ankit- you will have to do the same on your side of the museum. Maybe copy and paste or create an array.

Below is a link which takes you to a site where you can download my powerpoint. It was taking too long to upload it via blogger so I tried using a different method as usual. If the powerpoint cannot be downloaded than the interim handin requirements are on my website. The interactive 3D model did not work very well when exported from VIZ and therefore the model was exported as a .3ds file from deep explorer. It was firstly exported as a .dwg with camera views from VIZ but when imported in Deep Explorer, the camera views were not present but the model stayed aright.

Delta - Team Progress

Today we had a bit of a problem with the central file. Sam couldn't access the central file via his laptop. Due to some editable issues in revit, It would not allow Sam to save to central via his laptop or copy and paste the elements to the central file. As a result, we copied all the elements from the central file to Sam's file and created a new central file from that. It wasn't a big issue but sometimes when you edit stuff at home it doesnt let you connect back to the central file.

As far as the modelling progress goes, I have been testing out renders in VIZ for the handin and just playing with materials and perspective views of some of the spaces in the museum.

I have almost completed the space just need to add that ramp which I'm not sure how to do. I have been playing around with the ramp tool but it's not doing what I want it to do. Just keeps on coming up with errors. I will have to sort that out in tutorial session on Tuesday. I have placed all the windows and the connecting bridge. It would'nt let me edit its size and when you do change its size, the opening in the exterior surface remains the same. As a result, I created a family for the windows on the exterior surface of the library space in the second level and the exhibition spaces in the 3rd and 4th level. I have inserted windows on the second level and now moving onto the 3rd and 4th level. The process has been slow coz ive been watching the rugby instead!! Below is an image of the progress:

Delta Progress

Not much has been progressed today by me as I have been working on my other assignments. Just working on the glazing bits and trying to create voids in my walls which I created by using the mass tool rather than the wall tool. This was because it was far easier to use the mass tool by tracing around the dwg file and also, when I used the wall tool it wasn't lining up properly with the curved form of the walls.

Other feature of this museum is that it has an outdoor exhibition space which could be quite good to model. I've been trying to findout the heights and the levels of the ramps and other excess ways to this particular area. A problem that I have come across is that the topography probably has to be edited a bit in order to get the levels of the ramps right. This has to be done when the team gets together. Below are images of the outdoor exhibition space and an update of the model.

An Easier Way To Blog Images!!

It appears that the blogger is too slow in uploading images. Sometimes it takes 2 mins and sometimes it can take about 2 hours. Heres a way to solve this issue.

I have experimented a way in order to blog images faster through the use of photo sharing applications. Here's a simple guideline to upload images faster:

  • Sign up for a Flickr account if you don't have one yet
  • Upload images to Flickr after signing up through its website or Flickr uploader which can be downloaded so you can upload images straight from your PC
  • After uploading an image to your Flickr account click on the tab 'Your Photos' or click on the image you uploaded
  • When you click on the image you should see several icons on top of the image. Click on all sizes (the one with a magnifying glass symbol)
  • When you click on 'All Sizes' the available sizes should appear at the top of the window: Square, Thumbnail, Small, Medium, Origional
  • Click on 'Small'
  • When you click on 'small' At the bottom it should say: To link this image to website you can either: copy and paste it to HTML or grap the URL
  • At this point Go to the 303 Course Blog to add a new post containing the image.
  • When you create a new post you will see on the right top corner two different ways you can blog: 'HTML' or 'Compose'
  • Click on 'HTML' mode
  • Now going back to Flickr: copy and the HTML script where it says: Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage
  • Now go back to your blog post in HTML mode and paste the script
  • Now click on the 'Compose'Mode
  • WALLAH!! You should see the image
  • Now click on the image and link it to a bigger size of the image through a bigger image in Flickr by copying and pasting the URL

HOPEFULLY THIS WORKS FOR EVERYONE IT HAS CERTAINLY WORKED FOR ME LAST NIGHT AFTER EXPERIMENTING IT. IT DOES NOT UPLOAD THE IMAGE AS FLICKR HAS ALREADY UPLOAD IT FOR YOU SO WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS JUST EMBEDDING THE IMAGE TO YOUR BLOG AND THEREFORE IT TAKES LIKE 2 SECONDS TO GET THE IMAGE UP.

Delta Update on Sectional Perspective

After creating the floors for all the levels in the museum, I did a trial test of a sectional perspective on VIZ. The test was done without assigning any materials or placing a sun in the scene. It was just to trial how a sectional perspective can be created. I found the 'free camera' easier to use than a 'target camera' in VIZ in order to create a sectional perspective. The test was successful however, due to the form of the building being curved, it appears that to establish a perfect sectional perspective, it is quite difficult. The image below shows the test render of the sectional perspective.

Delta Progress as at 3/05/07

Today we as a team resolved some of the issues we've been having such as the topography, heights and floor levels. We also tested our model in VIZ for the sectional perspective requirement and it worked out fine.

I have been working on creating the respective floor levels on my side of the museum and trying to get the form of the building looking right. The floor slabs for all the levels are done except for the roof level which I need to finish off. Some of the walls from the levels below were visible when creating the floor slabs and therefore the heights of the walls had to be tweaked a bit so they don't show up in the renders. Below are some of the images showing the update of the model

Delta - Kumu Art Museum update light wells 2

Just been working out how to cut holes in the topo surface. In order to let light down underground via the light wells. I created a sub region on the surface.
then changed the materials to 100% transparent. i now need to try this in viz to check if it works ok.

Delta Progress Update

Today I worked on refining all the walls of the foyer area and the exhibition spaces on levels 2, 3 and 4.The refining of walls included changing of heights of the walls with respect to what levels they reach up to. Some walls only reach level 3 and some reach up to level 5 and therefore, I had to figure out the heights of each walls in the different spaces of the museum. I was able to do this by looking at the respective dwg files which we embedded on the different floor levels in revit.

Also, I have started modeling the library space on level 2 of the museum. This might have quite a lot of daylight in the space by looking at the amount of glazing area but the outdoor area might have to be modeled in order to determine whether the library space would produce sufficient renders with daylight.

Things which need to be sorted by the end of tomorrow's tutorial session include:

  • The heights of each of the levels we are modeling
  • Adding floor slabs to each of the respective floors
  • Modeling the connecting bridges in order to get the foyer area completed for the interim handin
  • Testing perspective section on VIZ
  • Testing deep explorer in order to create a 3d interactive model and save views (hopefully the tutors help us with this one as it is a requirement for the interim handin)
The file have been working on today: DeltaKumuacer2-05-07-2

Delta, Kumu Art Museum, -Model update sg 02/05/07 topography

I have re evaluated the topography and deleted the old one and then created a new topography almost automatically by importing my dwg file (with contained the contour line) as an instance. This created all the points I need and very accurately, all that is left to do is to select each contour and specify the elevation.

I have make a new level, 'level 0' the slab is placed on this level.

Delta Progress

Today I have been working on the exhibition spaces on my side of the museum and the foyer bit. The foyer area has been difficult to understand with the heights of the walls, ramps and the glazing areas. However, I managed to find an image which shows the particular area I am working on and has made it easier for me to understand the daylit space. I have almost completed the exterior facades of the museum and now just working on the interior spaces.

Since we decided not to model the ground floor due to no daylight spaces and exhibition areas, floor levels in revit were changed but the heights of the levels remain the same. This has to be changed in order to get the heights correct and will be done when the team gets together in the next tutorial session.

The files I have been working on today as per our office procedures include: At uni: DeltaKumuAS1-5-07-2 and At home: DeltaKumuacer1-5-07-2 (transferred from the central file to my laptop through the wireless network).

Blogging Via Microsoft Word 2007

If you have the new Microsoft office 2007 at home than you can blog straight from Word 2007. This is a new feature which is easier and faster. You can also publish images however, I haven't been able to find out how to add labels or tags. But you can publish it as a draft and than just edit it with labels on blogger.

To blog from office 2007 click on publish and then click on Blog. You just need to set it up with your username, password and the website where the blog has to be published.

I think the office suite at uni should be updated in order to use this particular feature which would make it easier.

Delta Progress

Today I have been working on the exhibition space on the third level. I have created most of the interior walls and have been trying to figure out the window sizes and the glazing types through images and the dwg files. I have also, recognized the connecting bridges which join the several exhibition spaces in level 3.

Some mistakes were found while modeling. Due to the changes we made on Levels in our Revit file, confusion occurred and as a result, some of the modeling elements were copied to the wrong floor. This issue has to be solved when the team gets together in class.

Delta email to blog selection from help

Here is an interesting way of blogging via email! Which could save
time.

How do I post via email?

The Mail-to-Blogger feature turns any email account into a
blog-posting application. In Settings | Email you can create a
Mail-to-Blogger address which you will use to send posts via email to
your blog:
Settings | Email tab

To post to your blog via email, you need to configure your
Mail-to-Blogger email address in Settings | Email:
Settings | Email

The format of the email address is username.secretword@blogger.com.
Note that this email address must be kept secret. Otherwise, anyone
who gets it will be able to post as you.

Also be sure to specify whether or not you prefer your email posts to
publish automatically. If this option is not checked, then your posts
will be saved on your account but will not appear on your blog until
you log in to Blogger.com and publish them yourself.

Once you have saved your Settings, you can send email to your blog.
The subjects of your email letters will be the titles of your posts,
and the body of the emails will be the posts themselves.

Blogging via Email, sg

Just sending this blog from my email. I found out how to do this
today Just testing to se if it works. Not sure how to add labels
though.
I don't think email to blog supports images or files which is a
bummer.

Although this is a quicker way of getting a blog up.

Just added a new pad to place on the topo surface. This will make it easy to build on.
So I have basically dropped a huge weight on top of the topo surface and flattened it where I need to build.

I have made this image low resolution and quality in photoshop But it still takes forever to upload to the FTP server, I have a pretty fast internet connection as well.

Delta Progress From My Side

I have been working on the file: DeltaKumuacer-28-04-07-1 as per our office procedures.'acer' being my laptop user account. By accessing the SOAD network through the wireless system on my laptop, I was able to copy our central file.

I have been working on the foyer and the entrance bit which leads to the exhibition space. Since some of the glazing is all curved, I had trouble using the 'curtain wall' tool. Also, I had trouble changing the thickness of the glass and therefore I made the glazing by creating a family. However, when I created the family, it didn't recognize it as a glazing type so I imported the model to VIZ and tested whether I can assign glazing materials to the family which I created. The result was positive as shown by a quick VIZ render below. The textures I used were just to test whether they work or not.

Delta - Kumu Art Museum Split down the middle update 2

We have realized that what we thought was exhibition space is in fact not, so we have had to re-evaluate how much Ankit is modeling and increase his scope of spaces. Otherwise he won't have enough exhibition space to render. So we have moved the line just for the 4th and 5th floor shown below.

I have uncovered some problems with the dwg plans in revit. They do not line up correctly! It appears that The 2nd floor plan is out of line with all the other plans. Unforlionally I have been modelling from the 2nd floor plan.

For example the column shown in the first image is prefectly alligned with the 2nd floor plan dwg when I extend his up over the whole height of the building it does not match up with the other floor dwgs. shown in image 2 is the same column on the 3rd level it does not line up with the dwg.

Now I need to get the changes in model file deltakumu1-24-04-07owngwynnsamu into file deltakumu2-24-04-07sg

I have tried importing the revit files into each other. When I import a model into deltakumu2-24-04-07sg the model imports ok but it is grouped and I can not edit it.

I think I will have to try copy and paste.

Delta - Progress

Heres the progress of Team Delta from my side as at 17th of April. I am still working on the central file at uni. I tried the relinquish option again but did not work at home when I opened the file to edit the model, it won't let me. Other than that, everything else is working smoothly. I have imported the dwg files of each floors to our central file and the model is slowly starting to take shape.

Delta Central File Issue

Ive been trying to sort out the central file issue we've been having but nothing can be done that I know off to allow us in editing the model at home. The 'Relinquish All Mine' feature hasn't been working. I think by clicking 'Relinquish All Mine' makes it non-editable. However, there is another feature when you go to the 'File' dropdown menu and into 'Worksets' A window pops up which has the editable features and allows us to create an editable workset. I tried doing that but it didn't work. This was probably because I didn't setup our central file. Maybe Sam, who setup our file can change the settings for the worksets.

Delta, Kumu Art Museum, -Model update sg

I am currently holidaying in Australia. I have been in Sydney since Friday the 6th of April. I am typing this in an apartment in Port Macquarie and will try to upload this tomorrow at an internet cafe. We have been traveling a bit, and I have been unable to sit down with an internet connection and blog this. I am still working on my model at night time and will upload to the course blog when I can.

Model

Modeling wise I have managed to put up most of the exterior walls on my half of the museum.

I have done this by measuring the widths of the walls using the ‘tape measure tool’ then creating new families to match. I Then sketched (with lines) over the imported dwgs.

I have uploaded my file from owner (Samuel’s laptop).

Delta, Kumu Art Museum, -Importing dwg plans

-Importing dwg plans

I have managed to imported the dwg plan for each level onto the respective views.

I had had trouble doing this before and the computer would just hang up.

The steps I have followed which seemed to have done worked:

Autocad - Save the dwg as an Autocad 2004 file.

Revit – Select the appropriate floor plan (e.g. select level 2 in order to import level 2 dwg) Import, CAD formats, select the file to import, tick manually place, tick cursor at centre, select ok, left click over the top of the building somewhere, rescale the dwg, using the rescale tool select two points a apart distance that you know (in my case I selected the stairs at the top centre of the plan, which I know are 6507mm wide (I measured this in AutoCAD)),

Then just move the dwg to fit. I ended up with all this other rubbish on some of the other levels in Revit. Then right click on the plans views in Revit, select ‘View Properties’, Visibility – edit, select ‘imported categories’ tab, deselect all except the dwg plan you want visible. Repeat for all levels.

-Also in 3D view hide all of the imported dwgs (from view properties) so the 3D view doesn’t get confusing and cluttered. Easy

Delta, Kumu Art Museum, Problems with Worksharing

I am currently holidaying in Australia. I have been in Sydney since Friday the 6th of April. I am typing this in an apartment in Port Macquarie and will try to upload this tomorrow at an internet cafe. We have been traveling a bit, and I have been unable to sit down with an internet connection and blog this. I am still working on my model at night time and will upload to the course blog when I can.

-Problems we have been having with Worksharing

I have been working on my laptop.

I have had some trouble transferring the work shared central files from the SOAD computers to my laptop and gaining access/editing rights.

Because my laptop was set up under with a different user name “Owner” I do not have editing rights.

I have tried changing my user name on my computer to fix it. The appearance login name changes but it doesn’t change the username in Revit.

I think what I should have done was ‘Relinquish All’ before I saved the central file to the R drive.

-Possible Solution

I think Relinquish all would have allowed access for anyone to edit the files. Or I should have opened the central file from the R drive over the soad wireless network.

For now I have been forced to make separate copies of the files for editing, when I do this Revit gives me an error message, “when I reconnect to the central file some changes may be lost”. I will have to sort these things out later.

Team Delta - Kumu Art Museum on Google Earth

A 3D sketchup model of the museum was not found in google earth however, the loaction was found. One of the interesting thing I found out this weekend was that you can make 'mashups' with a new google tool 'My Maps'. Its a new web2.0 feature of Google's Maps service which lets anyone create customizable maps and add information on various buildings and services through text, videos and images. The new 'My Maps' feature can create a link or a '.kml' file which than can be viewed via google earth or the internet by the public. For further information on "My Maps" visit the link below:

http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9705175-2.html?tag=blog

Its even got a video tutorial on what the new feature is all about and how to use it.

Above is an image showing the museum and a placemark I created in the Google Maps feature. The .kml file can be found below:

Delta - Kumu Art Museum, Revit Worksharing

We have just set up a work sharing file that we can use to share what we have done. This allows us to merge what we have done gradually through out the process with out having to copy and paste. Our central file is R:\BBSC\Handin_Folders\BBSC303\shared_work_folders\Team_Delta\delta kumu_revitfiles\DeltaKumushared.rvt

With this we can each work locally on our own models and save it in our own I drives but when we hit save to central button it will save these same changes to a central file. The other person can then merge these changes into his file by hitting "Reload latest". It is still important that we each backup our own files on our I drives, on the R drive and on our USB sticks. We will still be blogging our files as well.

In case your wondering how to set up worksharing:

  1. To set up worksharing first click File menu Worksets

A message dialog displays, showing the default workset names. Rename the worksets, and click OK.

  2. Next in the Worksets dialog, click OK.
  3. Click File menu Save As.
  4. On the R drive :\BBSC\Handin_Folders\BBSC303\shared_work_folders/ create a team folder and save the central file in that folder, using name that both of you will recognise as the central file
  5. Click the Options button.
  6. In the File Save Options, verify that Make this the Central File after save is selected, and click OK.
  7. This option should be checked default but it is wise to just check
  8. click Save

  9. To use this work sharing the other person with have to open the file from the R Drive. If they have started any modeling of their own you will have to copy and paste this model into the file.
Any questions add a comment

Delta - Kumu Art Museum joining the building - test

We have just tried joining the basic two halves of the building. We took Ankit's half consisting of a few walls and my half of the building consisting of a few walls and joined them together.
I used copy and paste Ankit's model into my Revit model. It was very easy to position it as the guides sort of showed up. We then used the align tool and the join tool to join the walls. At least it works fine.
We found we can also import the other model which is perhaps a more efficient way of doing it but using this tool it imported the other model as a whole group. We couldn't find a method of expolding this group and joining it into the existing model.

Here is the joined model
